Creating a Reading Nook in an Awkward Corner

Creating a Reading Nook in an Awkward Corner

Fit a slim armchair, wall light and small side table into the space, then add a floor cushion for comfortable, focused reading.

Start with the Space, Not the Furniture

Awkward corners have a habit of swallowing furniture. Before you fall for a chair online, spend five minutes with a tape measure. Measure the width between the skirting boards at floor level, then again at seat height and at shoulder height. Chimney breasts, dado rails, radiators and sloping ceilings all steal space as you go up, and a corner that looks generous in a photograph can lose 15cm the moment a curtain hangs beside it.

While you are there, note where the plug sockets sit, which way the door swings, and how the light behaves. Sit on a cushion in the corner at the time of day you actually plan to read. A nook beside a bright window needs a different lighting plan from one tucked into a dark alcove, and knowing this now will shape every purchase that follows.

Pick a Slim Armchair That Earns Its Place

The chair is the anchor, so be ruthless. A traditional wingback can easily be 90cm wide, which is too much for most corners. Look instead for a slim accent chair in the region of 60 to 70cm wide, with a seat depth of around 50cm and a high back to support your neck while you read. Narrow arms matter more than you might think: arms of 10cm or less let you sit close to a wall light without banging your elbow.

Angle the chair at roughly 30 to 45 degrees across the corner rather than pushing it flat against both walls. This opens up the space, gives you somewhere to tuck a small table behind, and stops the nook feeling like a punishment. If a radiator shares the corner, keep a 10cm gap for air to circulate. Swivel bases are a clever choice in tight spots because you can turn towards the window for daylight and back to the lamp in the evening.

Light the Page, Not the Room

A wall light is the single best upgrade for a reading corner, because it frees up floor space and puts light exactly where you need it. Choose a model with an adjustable arm or flexible neck so you can angle the beam onto the page rather than over your shoulder. A shade of 15 to 20cm in diameter is usually enough; anything wider will look heavy in a small recess.

Position the light around 60 to 75cm above seat height and slightly behind your shoulder. This avoids the glare you get when a lamp shines straight at your eyes, and it stops your own shadow falling across the text. If you cannot run new wiring, a plug-in wall light with a discreet fabric cable is a perfectly respectable solution; fix the cable along the skirting with clips and it will disappear. For bulbs, aim for a warm white around 2700K and 400 to 600 lumens, with a dimmable option for evening wind-down.

Find a Side Table That Does Just Enough

You need room for a mug, a pair of glasses and the book you are not currently reading. That is all. A round tabletop of 35 to 45cm is ideal, because curves soften a corner full of right angles and you will not crack your hip on a sharp edge. C-shaped tables slide neatly over the arm of a chair, while a small nest of two gives you somewhere to park a second cup when a friend joins you.

Height matters: the tabletop should sit level with, or just below, the arm of your chair so you can reach it without stretching. If floor space is genuinely tight, a floating shelf at seat height does the same job while keeping the floor clear. In a narrow alcove, a wall-mounted shelf 25cm deep and 40cm wide is often the better answer.

Add a Floor Cushion for Long, Cosy Sessions

This is the detail most people skip, and it is the one that turns a corner from a place to perch into a place to stay. A floor cushion or large pouffe gives you somewhere to put your feet up, and it doubles as extra seating when someone wanders over to chat. Look for a cushion around 60cm square and at least 12cm deep; anything flatter will feel like sitting on the floorboards.

  • For comfort: a firm foam or wool-filled cushion holds its shape far better than a loose fibre one.
  • For texture: bouclé, chunky knit or a woven wool adds warmth against bare floor or a pale rug.
  • For practicality: a cushion with a removable, washable cover is worth the extra few pounds in a room where drinks are involved.
  • For storage: a pouffe with a lift-off lid hides a spare blanket and keeps clutter out of sight.

Tuck it to one side so it does not block your route in and out, and keep the walkway to the door at least 60cm clear.

Finish the Nook Without Cluttering It

Small spaces turn messy quickly, so the final layer should be restrained. Add one throw folded over the back of the chair and one small rug — a 120cm round or a narrow runner works well in a corner — to define the zone and warm the floor. A single framed print or a small shelf of books above the chair draws the eye upward and makes the corner feel intentional rather than leftover.

Then leave it alone. The pleasure of a reading nook comes from its simplicity: one chair, one light, one table, one cushion, and nothing competing for your attention. Keep the surfaces clear, resist the urge to fill every gap, and you will have created a corner you actually use rather than one you simply walk past.
